Oh, how easy (and tempting) it would be to write something witty in response to the going-ons of Harold Camping and his Family Radio ministry. And how easy to mention the verses that refute what he is saying, the verses that speak against presumptuous prophecies, and Jesus’ own warnings of the end times. Or how easy to mention example after example of previous failed dooms-day prophecies that have been written off as purely spiritual experiences. As I was pondering these things, wanting to get in on the ‘anti-Harold’ hype, the Holy Spirit drew my attention to Philippians 1:4 and simply asked me, “So why don’t you pray for him?”
I was like “what???????” He doesn’t need my prayers! He needs my knowledge of the Bible (the little bit that I have)! But God just spoke again and said, “No. He needs your prayers.” You see, Paul writes some incredible stuff in Philippians 1:3-6 (NKJV):
(3) I thank my God upon every remembrance of you, (4) always in every prayer of mine making request for you all with joy, (5) for your fellowship in the gospel from the first day until now, (6) being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ;
I’m not going to get into all that Paul is saying, but God was directing me to verse 4 which says that in every prayer of Paul’s, he was praying with joy for those that he was remembering. EVERY prayer! Not some prayers, but EVERY prayer. That’s a tall order (in my mind), but it is the teaching of the Bible.
So the question is, when last did you pray for your local dooms-day prophet?
Join me now:
Father, I pray for Harold Camping and I thank You Lord for this zealous servant of Yours. I thank You Lord that He is eager for Your return, as we all are, but ask Father that You would give Him light to see the truth that no-one knows the day or hour, not even the angels or the Son of Man. I pray Father that You would help him to keep his tongue so that no more people may be deceived and so that Your name can be mocked no more. I pray that You would continue to fill him with Your Spirit so that he (and all of us), can be getting on with the work of Your Kingdom, until Your Son’s return. In Jesus name. Amen.
